Are you creating your life or does life create you?
Do you start each day with a positive intention and focus? Or do you begin on automatic pilot? Are you aware and present when you are eating your breakfast or is it something that you do in a trance and maybe with your mind thinking about what it is going to do next? If you go out to work are you present and at ease with your colleagues? Do you feel joyful about what you are doing? Or is it something you have to get through so that you can go home at the end of the day? Do you find that you react to events during your day? If you go out to work maybe you have a rude or difficult client or customer. Perhaps you have several in a row. Or a staff meeting where colleagues are stressed and voices raised. Does that then affect your mood for the rest of the day?
Maybe you're at home for a while and no visitors to interact with - but are you watching the tv or reading the papers? How are you being affected by what you are reading. I stopped reading newspapers on a regular basis quite a long time ago. I do keep in touch with the news but read a paper once a week at most. When I do I am struck by what feel to me stories of "doom and gloom" and the focus seems to be on the negative. And even if you don't interact much with others, what about the weather? Especially with all the rain and wind that we've been experiencing lately: How do you feel? What stories do you tell yourself?
It is very easy to go through our days in unconscious patterns and not paying attention to what is occurring each and every moment. Yet each moment of our lives we are creating. The way that we think and feel in each moment will dictate what we are creating for ourselves. So if we are spending a lot of time feeling stress, upset, irritation, concern, worry then we will be creating more of that. That is what I mean by life creating you. If you are not deliberately conscious and creating what you truly want then something altogether different is being created.
If we are actively present in our day from the moment we wake up then we can be aware of what is happening around us and our response to it. We can be aware of our feelings, our emotions, our thoughts and what our bodies are experiencing. We can know whether we are feeling tense or relaxed and why. The more we are in tune with our bodies and our reactions the more we are able to choose our responses.
We don't need to be buffeted around by what is happening in the world around us. We can be in control of our experiences and by being so we are then creating our life. Each day we have the opportunity to create something beautiful and something we truly want, rather than being taken over by something we don’t desire.
So are you creating your life or does life create you?
